Activity #3: Digital Storytelling

#3 Digital Storytelling

I thought that both of these sites had some opportunities for student use. I like the idea of students writing and creating their own stories. This is a great way for students to share stories without using a bunch of paper. I found myself spending time uploading pictures so that I could create a book that I could use with my students.I decided to use ZooBurst because it was the one that I could upload my own images. First I had to upload the images to my computer. From what I could figure out I couldn't download them directly from the internet. It didn't take too long to get what I wanted onto my computer. Then it was really easy to create the book with text. It did allow me to use Spanish character - but I needed to use the HTML codes for each Spanish character.

  1. Another creative thing...perhaps one could have the kids choose one of the many things we are exploring within the semester with whatever topic...

  2. Que fantastico! Muy divertido. Gracias por el cuento. Another great way to use this tool. It makes me think of the lessons I could turn into story books.

  3. Your Zooburst made me VERY hungry... Seriously my stomach is grumbling. I can totally see students creating their own books with Spanish text. I'm impressed that you figured out the Spanish characters in HTML. Wow!

  4. Oh, one more thing. Try embedding your Zooburst directly into your blog using the embed code that Zooburst provides. The video I sent out isn't specific to Zooburst but it's basically the same process: http://youtu.be/PWXm3K16R0k

  5. H, Laura - even though I didn't follow the text (in Spanish, which is weak for me now), I still followed the flow of the Zooburst presentation. Like my Zooburst story, I find that the minimal number of icons, which in turn convey a minimal amount of detail, still convey enough to draw the viewer in. I think the cuteness and unusuality (I just coined that term) of the medium is sufficient to overcome the minimal-ness of what Zooburst (and other similar tools) offer - plus that keeps me at least from searching through menu after menu for that perfect icon to communicate what I want.

  6. Fun way to work with vocab! (I'm still learning the whole embedding thing too!)

  7. I wondered if ZooBurst was something that could be successfully used in a HS environment. Looking at yours, I can see that it can be a fun way to present relevant content/student work in an interesting way.

  8. I love what you did Laura. I think this worked better than using Storybird because you can import your own photos and so you have more control over what you can do.

  9. A lot of tech in the summer camp seems too "kiddy" for me to use in high school but world languages is a perfect place for it. Because students are learning language in a manner that younger students learn languages all this "kiddy" tech is great for them!! I remember in high school I learned spanish through signing and I imagine that all of the tech in this class like zooburst would work just as well as this. I am envious that there is so much more fun tech out there that really fit your course more than mine.
